Personal profile

Professor Li Yang joined XTJLU in April 2013. Her current research is to develop a broad range of nanomaterials and understand their nanoscale properties including electronic, photonic, electrochemical, mechanical and interfacial properties for the applications of energy conversion and storage, molecular electronics, and environmental technologies. Prof. Yang has authored and co-authored over 120 journal papers and 5 book chapters, and delivered numerous international presentations. She has supervised 9 Ph.D and 12 MRes students to completion. Prof. Yang has made a major contributions to international leadership in physics, appointed as the Chartered Physicist of the Institute of Physics (IOP, UK) in 2013. She was also the winner of several awards including: 2021 Suzhou SEID Excellent Scientific and Education Talent, 2018 Jiangsu 333 Project, 2016-2018 SIP Shortage Talent, and 2014 Jiangsu Six-Peak Talent. Prof. Yang was the Principal Investigator of the following research grants: 2017 and 2015 NSFC grant, 2022 and 2016 Suzhou Science and Technology grant, 2014 Jiangsu Science and Technology grant, 2 Key Program Special Fund (KSF) at XJTLU, 2 XJTLU research and development fund (RDF) grants, 3 full XJTLU postgraduate research scholarships, 3 exploratory funded grants (2 awarded proposals in one call) by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) Strategic Research Programme and contributed to many other projects funded by UK Technologic Science Board, National Measurement System and European Metrology Research Programme. Prior to XJTLU, she was a higher research scientist at NPL, UK and worked in large multiple research programs from 2007-2013. She received her PhD from the University of Bristol (UK) with funding from the prestigious Overseas Research Student Award Scheme (ORSAS) from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Research interests

Molecular Electronics/Single-molecule dynamics and detection

The research focus is to fabricate single molecule circuits, a molecule attached to two electrodes, with varied functionality, where the circuit structure is defined with atomic precision. The ultimate goal is to understand the interplay of physics, chemistry and engineering at the nanometer scale. These are challenging and interdisciplinary frontier research areas with many opportunities and great potential applications.

Advanced materials for energy storage application

Based on the fundamental study on electrochemical and electro-chemo-mechanical phenomena in diverse energy storage systems, the group currently focuses clean energy storage solutions with high energy density and power density, in particular, on new materials development, novel synthesis approaches, and structure-composition-performance relationships.

Surfaces and Interfaces at all scales

Due to the rapidly shrinking size of electronic devices, studying all-scale structures and their surfaces and interfaces using advanced surface analytical techniques are vital to the development of future novel electronics and energy storage devices.
